I will die on this hill: Early-stage founders need to over-invest in their pitch deck Most investors aren’t willing to admit it, but a high-quality pitch deck has an impact on the impression you create as a founder. It’s a window into everything else you’re going to do as a company. If you’re paying attention to the smallest details in the pitch deck, you’re probably paying attention to those small details in your company, too.
I strongly agree with this - it's an exercise in being concise and being able to effectively tell your story --- which you will do over and over again
YC taught us to just have a simple deck that tells the story. Build something people want, get real traction, and focus less on making a flashy deck to impress investors. I believe that there’s a baseline of goodness, but if you’re too focused on making the deck look nice-you’re missing the point. I’d argue that YC startups are some of the most successful at raising capital. I think that a great deck isn’t necessarily judged by how pretty it is, it by the content that it conveys. If you don’t tell the story in a direct and obvious way, nobody will care how good it looks. That doesn’t mean that it should look like crap though 😀.
Got any examples of really excellent pitch decks?
I 100% agree. From my standpoint, the pitch deck serves as a mirror reflecting the ongoing evolution of ideas, strategies, and the overall trajectory of the startup, echoing the improvement of the entire brand. This isn't a document meant to stay stored in a Google drive once completed, instead, it functions as a living, breathing representation of the startup's journey. It intricately narrates the story of evolution, mapping the progression from a raw idea to a polished, investable business. Beyond its role as a pitch tool, it stands as a testament to the startup's unwavering commitment to constant quality across it's products, content, brand, etc.
I don’t know whether it applies to all founders, but it worked extremely well for us. We spent a lot of time and money (both of which were in short supply.) We used the deck to pitch directly to investors and during Techstars demo day. We raised a very healthy seed round one week after demo day, and I know for a fact the deck played a big part in that.
memo > pitch deck
Counterpoint: expectations vary depending on sector. If you're a heavy deeptech startup coming from an academic/R&D background then the graphics matter less than conveying competence. If you're a consumer proposition then the "wow" factor is critical.
